Gruene Hall Austin Texas
Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall. By design, not much has physically changed since the Hall was first built. The 6,000 square foot dance hall with a high pitched tin roof still has the original layout with side flaps for open air dancing, a bar in the front, a small lighted stage in the back and a huge outdoor garden. Advertisement signs from the 1930's and 40’s still hang in the old hall and around the stage

Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar
Situated on the banks of the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels between Austin and San Antonio, the Gruene cotton gin processed crops raised by area farmers until the wooden structure burned to the ground in 1922. All that remains of the water-powered mill today is the three story brick boiler room – now the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar.

Chicken Fried Steak**+ Hand breaded and deep fried, top with cream gravy. Great flavor, but served lukewarm with the gravy starting to jell.

The location is wonderful and the employee’s and servers were great. I believe distance between the kitchen and were we were siting may have been the problem for them.

Saturday brought us Oregon Pinot Envy Day. We were taken through Oregon from the Umpqua Valley on up to the Willamette Valley where we had a face-off between three fabulous Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs.

Adelsheim Vineyards 2009 Chardonnay, Willamette Valley**+ pairs, white peaches

A Week of ‘Food, Wine, Travel and Dining Out’

This is the week of our anniversary. We have plans to visit Orcas Island, Washington and stay at Rosario's Resort and Spa. It's the off-season on Orcas Island, Rosario's restaurant and lounge, as well as many restaurants on the island are closed for the season. By checking the web and making several phone calls we found enough open for the amount of time we were staying. Once we returned home we are planning to wine taste at Wicked Cellars, have our anniversary dinner at Lombardi's Neighborhood Italian Restaurant Everett Marina, attend a wine release party at Edmonds Cellar in Woodinville where May Palmer  - The Queen of Ivory Soul is performing and attendance a 50th birthday party.

Moran Mansion at Rosario is like stepping back in time. Built between 1906-1909 by Seattle Shipbuilder and Mayor Robert Moran, the mansion features original photographs from the late 1800's and early 1900's, original furnishings and fixtures, and an extensive display of the ships built by the Moran Brothers Company in Seattle.

Rosario Resort's guest rooms are surrounded by beauty of the San Juan Islands with views of East Sound and Cascade Bay on Orcas Island. We stayed in the Bayside Rooms located in the Skagit Building, a short walk from the Moran Mansion and Rosario Marina. Our room featured one king bed with sliding-glass doors that open onto a balcony with island views. The room has a television, small refrigerator, wireless internet (free) coffeemakers and private bathrooms, but no microwave. We enjoyed the room very much. The room was serviced daily even though we did not leave at the crack of dawn.

After checking in and getting settled it was off to Eastsound, Washington for lunch.
Eastsound is the population center for Orcas Island, the second-most populated and physically largest of the San Juan Islands. Eastsound consists of a few hotels and several restaurants, numerous gift stores, a large downtown grocery store, natural food store, hardware store, pharmacy, airport, and several churches. There is a public park that hosts events including the farmers market.

They food was the best I have had in the state in some time. We had Chili Relleno****+ stuff with jack cheese, zucchini, chopped Spanish onion, and toasted pine nuts, with Spanish rice and refried beans, the chili was coated in a wonderful tasting coating and Crab Enchiladas*** with seafood sauce, rice and beans. Great place, great food, service was a bit to efficient for a evening meal.

Day Four – Orcas Island
Orcas Island to Anacortes Ferry
Time to head home…

Our trip to Orcas Island was wonderful. Rosario's under the new owners is gaining the excellence it has had in the past. Even though this was the off-season there were many fine restaurants still open in Eastsound. We would like to thank all the owners and staffs of these fine restaurants for their wonderful meals and service. Their passion for food and the industry shows.
